The $45 million civic and office complex, The Corso at North Lakes, sets a new benchmark for public buildings and was recently awarded a 5 Star Green Star Public Building PILOT Rating – the first in Queensland and joint first in Australia.
A significant project for the local community comprising a state-of-the-art library, community centre and office complex, The Corso at North Lakes provides an ideal space for public interaction, engagement and self-expression, said Ray Pini, Project Leader, Pdt Architects.
“Our design provides visual connection between the community centre, the library and the external environment to encourage interaction, promote connectivity and incite a sense of place and community,” he said. “A favourite of mine is the public plaza and shared building entrance which gives the local community a wide range of event and performance options,” he said.
The Green Star Public Building PILOT was established by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) to support the sustainable planning, design and construction of high-performance public buildings. The Pdt Architects team worked closely with sustainability consultants Eco Lateral to deliver significant energy and water savings, reduce operational costs and improve the wellbeing of occupants.
“Sustainable design features include floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights, a split ventilation system, roof-mounted solar panels, rain water collection, external shade structures, internal materials made with zero organic compounds and a whole lot more…” said Ray Pini.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor, Allan Sutherland, said “The Corso will break the mould for public buildings in Australia. I’m over the moon that The Corso at North Lakes has been recognised as one of Australia’s first public buildings to be awarded a 5 Star Green Star rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.” *
